In spring 2010, we looked at the case of Angela Sanford, a New Mexico woman who was charged with stabbing a man with a "Wiccan dagger" thirteen times. Sanford had the victim, 52-year-old Joel Leyba, listed in her cell phone as "sacrifice," rather than by his name. Sanford filed a no contest plea back in August, and this past week was sentenced to twenty years in prison.
While the news story isn't that great, and uses one of my least favorite phrases, "self proclaimed witch," it's important to note that Sanford herself was the one who brought the angle of her religion into this case. While she originally claimed she had killed Leyba in self-defense, fearing he was going to rape her, she later told investigators she killed him as part of a "Wiccan ritual for spring."
